Interesting info about the batteries and rust. This truck is the oldest vehicle I've owned so far, so now I'll be more observant in the future.
You're right about letting sentiments clouding my judgement. I'll continue to stick with the original plan and get the truck smoged and then keep driving it 'til it sells. The truck continues to remain useful as it is, bit I am thinking ahead about my future plans as well, which is where the diesel comes in.
Honestly, I haven't really tried the 4wd feature while driving. At first, the shifter wouldn't budge. Then when it did, it kept popping out. Finally figured out it was related to the manual locking hubs. I'll give it another try before posting it for sale.

Structurally/safety wise it's fine. But those trucks did tend to rust out badly- I had a '76 2WD Blazer that was a Fred Flintstone special as in no floor boards on either side, plus the doors and sills completely rusted through or missing (it was from PA). The PO had used a cut up yield sign to reinforce it enough that your feet didn't hit the road.
Passenger side front was due to the batteries leaking/venting through the years. This is seen on nearly all vehicles that were around before sealed batteries, and is the main reason VW bugs all seem to have rusted out floors under the rear seat where the battery was.
I agree w/those who say don't bother trying to fix it up. Don't let sentiment cloud your judgement. I'd sell it as-is to someone like you mentioned. If the 4WD/transfer case/etc. all work, it still has value IMHO

Thanks for that input. Whether I decide to keep it or sell it, I do feel a bit safer about it. It has already been made into a 4x4 toy by one of the previous owners, so not much for me to add but lots to repair and maintain. And yes, it has proven quite handy several times now.
I did go to the LMC Truck site and looked up the floor boards for the truck. The prices were much cheaper than I thought.

|cyclopsblown34||By what I can tell from the photos, anybody around here would love to latch onto something so "solid". If the cab mounts are solid and not sunken, I would consider going through it and making it a fun toy. 3/4 ton 4by makes it a useful four wheel drive.|

Thank you everyone for the input. Your insight gives me a few things to think about.
Yes, similar trucks are posted for sale locally in an affordable price range. My future plans include moving on to a diesel truck, preferably from the 80's or 90's years.
This truck does have sentimental value because I have learned to do quite a few things on it that I didn't know how to do before. But I have never used it for what it was built for: off-roading and hauling. So my plan was to sell it off to someone who would actually use it for what it was built to do by the previous owner. But I don't want to sell it if it isn't structurally safe, which is why I asked my question.
Then again, maybe I can try my hand at body work and learn yet another thing on this truck... Gonna do some browsing on the LMC Truck site.
While I continue to debate and ponder, other opinions and tips welcome. Thanks again!

|deadbodyman||These old chevy trucks have a ton of sheet metal parts available you can get every single part for them even the seals and interior,plus they are fun to work on .I love tearing them down and replacing everything but its expensive and takes skills.I would rebuild the whole truck inc.motor & tranny and front end (of coarse) and then you would have a nice new truck at a bargin price.(compared to a brand new one) So,if it were ME I'd keep it ,rebuild it and have some fun with it, those are pretty tuff trucks and pretty good in the woods that 4wh dr is twice the fun and does twice the work as any regular truck, it also uses twice the gas...I looks safe enough to me, take it out in the mountains with your friends and have a blast ,if it breaks down just leave it there if it dont break rebuild it or just wear it out in the woods...I'd have fun with it. around here the 4wd trucks arnt to popular but up north any 4wd truck that runs in any shape is worth 1,500.00 as a parking lot plow...I sat that one is worth about 2500.00 to the right person...|

Dont spend any money trying to make it pretty.
Just drive it if it is safe, or sell it if it isnt.
It is nothing more than a huge money hole waiting to suck every dollar out of your wallet.

To know for sure if it is safe or not you would have to get someone to do physical inspection, but its not likely that the rust would be safety hazard. However that is probably one of the most rusty vehicles in the whole LA basin so why would you want to spend anything on fixing it up?
I checked craigs list and found two similar trucks with almost no rust for $1500-$2000

1977 Chevy K20: Body Rust - Assessment and Advice Needed
I have a 1977 Chevy truck that seems to be suffering from rust. The rust appears to range from as minor as surface rust to as much as what appears to be rot in the passenger side of the floor board. The passenger side appears more heavily affected than the driver side. Images are posted below. I can get more detailed shots if needed.
I have no body work experience and I would like to request the members' input as to whether the body is safe for continued use, if it requires immediate attention, or if it is best to junk it due to safety and high cost of repair.
EDIT: I should add the following: the trucks does rattle quite a bit; the steering suspension need some attention; the smog check is due; and I was planning on selling it in the next few months.
