You spent a lot less than if you went to the the Big Boy$, and you bought a better product. Oh and did you notice the customer service!

Has anyone used the 99k off the shelf stuff? From what I understand its called a "factory pack"...? He said something about it being what GM uses from the factory.

Anyway im using the SPI epoxy, 2k build, and clear.
Ive heard shopline fades after a few years, so id rather leave that one out. Any opinions on a choice?? Thanks!
Why not use SPI black basecoat?

If you like SPI then why not use their new black, which Barry says is jet Black

MARTINSR You also have to get educated in whether it's 99K or 99S or what ever for the paint you want. I don't remember at all but 99S is what sounds like I use to spray but I think that's acyilic enamel, SS, not Chroma-base. So maybe the 99K is Chroma-base. It also maybe isn't an actual toner but a "factory pack" black as you mentioned, I could be wrong there. Wait, it is coming back to me, that may be exactly what it is.

Mach1460 Thanks for the heads up. Strange though, I have found numerous places online that state the 99k paint code is a solid black, same black from a Buick Grand National but not the Buick paint code.

I just did and Ebay search for "dupont 99k" brings up Duponts Chromabase black base coat..

i think i confused the PPG and the 99k, as stated its a dupont 99k is a std. black base coat.

MARTINSR I just checked in the paint system here at the shop and the only auto manufacturer who uses the "99K" as a paint code is Chrysler and it's a pearl black.

So be careful with your terminology you could get something you are not after.

MARTINSR 99K is not a GM paint code on a Grand National or any other GM car or truck. The code is something like WA8555. 99K is a part number for Dupont black toner, black toner used in formulas to make other colors. Used by it's self it's "99K black". So you CAN NOT get a 99K PPG paint. They are bending the truth or description a bit if they are calling PPG a "99K" what they probably mean is simply the blackest black PPG toner. But it would have another number of course because it isn't Dupont.

It is not what GM used, not by my guess. They get paint from a few manufacturers I believe and it's probably a crap shoot as to what paint manufacturers paint would be on a particular car.

GM black is NOT very black, be it on a Grand National as far as I know I could be wrong but any black car or truck from GM is going to have the same code. It is MILES from "black" as I remember. That 99K wasn't very black either from what I remember. You need to get a little bit of each and brush it out on a piece of metal. Go to the paint store and ask for a sample spoon like at the ice cream shop. As far as the value line "Shop line" I seriously think it would be as black as the high end stuff being from what I understand the blacker blacks require more grinding of the pigment. More grinding sounds like higher cost to me so the value line isn't going to have that.

Just get some samples and see what makes you happy.
