X3 you have a good one in that block. JMO i am running a 408 with a stroker kit and i love it never had and problems yet.

Agreed. Good block.
Splayed-bolt caps are far prefered for a strong 400SB. "Straight" bolts take material from an already weak area. Splayed bolts tie in to the "V".
As with all modifications like this, quality machine work is paramount in making the engine "live". Measure it closely. If properly done, can easily support 600 HP.

400 sb 509 block
I have a 509 block with block number 3951509. How do I tell if it is a 2bt or 4bt seeing how they were both made under that number. It has 4 bolts but it has had alot of machine work. not sure if cap are aftermarked or not. Outter bolt are bolted at an angle. I have seen splayed cap but am not sure if they are an older style.
