hoops It's been over a year since I pulled it out of the old block and my memory sucks, but I could swear it has a slight bend to it.

In any case, I will be replacing the oil pan with a known good one when I get over procrastinating (hate lying on a garage floor). I'll find out then. I only asked today because I'm cleaning up loose ends on the car and that got me thinking about the dipstick thing.

Thanks to everyone. This forum is great and so are the people that visit it like you guys.

BigChevyFTW its not suppost to be bent its on the angle of the block which in turn points it to under the main webs.

lmsport It should not be bent.
I think.
I recall them just being a straight piece of 5/16 tube about 4" long that was installed from the top to keep the dipstick aligned with the main cap. I have not done much with stock blocks in a while. I tap the hole and put a pipe plug in and use a provision on the oil pan to check the level.

BigChevyFTW that tube you speak of isnt even needed most machine shops dont even put them back on. id cut it off if its messed up and run it without it.

if you notice its aligned with a main cap so the dip stick cant hit any rotating parts so dont worry it wont hit anything i didnt use it on my 383 and i have had no issues.

its suppost to point down towards the main cap!

hoops Imsport, there was no interference to the windage tray when I put it on. I checked.

If away from the crank is right, that's the way I put it. In other words the bend was facing down towards the bottom of the pan.

I remember when I took the bent tube out I had a hell of a time because I didn't know which way it came out. It was quite awhile ago when I removed it, but I remember trying to pull it out from the bottom with pliers and tapping it with a hammer to try to push it up the dipstick hole. Because it was stuck, maybe I bent it when I was trying to get it out.

Chris, unless someone says you're wrong, which I don't think will happen, I'm going with your answer about it pointing down because that's what looked right to me when I put it in. Because of the pan being poor quality, which it is, maybe the windage tray was placed in the wrong place. I quess I'll find out when I install the new pan.

lmsport Most racing pans wont accommodate that tube due to windage tray interference.

SBC Question

I hope I can explain this in a way that is understandable.

I bought a new 350 GM bare block to replace a block that was bad. The bare block was missing a tube with a slight bend on it that goes into the block and sticks out a little into the oil pan area. This tube goes into the block, in the dipstick hole, before the dipstick tube goes in and it directs the dipstick into the proper position for correct alignment once the dipstick goes into the oil pan area.

Fortunately I had kept the bent tube from the bad block, but I'm not sure if I positioned the bend in the correct direction. I say this because I bought a cheap racing oil pan (IMCA) on Ebay and now I have to screw around with getting the dipstick through the hole in the windage tray even though I had enlarged that hole.

If you understand what bent tube I'm writing about then can you tell me which direction the bent part of the tube should be pointing? In other words, if you were standing at the opposite side of the block from where the tube goes in would the bent part of the tube be at the six o'clock position (pointing down) or some other position?

I need to know the answer on this tube because Im replacing the oil pan soon because it was so distorted I had to use a pipe clamp to align the bolt holes on one side when the other side was held in place by two bolts and it also leaks in the back, at the top, in the main bearing area.

With regard to the cheap oil pan . Lesson learned
