I have a motor that a friend gave me, he says its a 302 but the manifold clearly says 5.8. Obviously its no 5.0, the distributor gear measures 1 1/4, and the valve covers are 6 bolt. There is a stamp in the
lifter valley that says 351, Do I have my hands on a Windsor?

You need to write down the numbers stamped on the outer face of one of the heads. I'm not a SBF guy but this is how Chevy does it. Then you can research those stamped numbers, on an Engine Chart website....(I Googled the question and found this website Help - decode engine block, Original? - Ford Mustang Forums - According to one of the sites listed, it appears Ford didn't always stamp their blocks and tranny's like Chevy. News to ME! LOL!

If it says 5.8 and 351, sure sounds like a 351W to me. Measure a pushrod, the 302 pushrods are something like 6.25" and the 351W should be around 8.150" or 8.182" depending on the rockers.

The numbers stamped on the passenger side of the block around the starter will help you figure out what year it is, too.

I can't seem to recall how to do an "Advanced Search", but I KNOW there is a previous thread here on HR.com that had a couple of really nice pictures that made it extremely easy (foolproof) to spot the taller deck height on a 351W.

It had to do with the difference between the "china wall" and the distributor mounting bolt.

I *did* find this using Google Images:

which is also a good visual indication of the difference.
