I found a qjet, should have it soon, while I am waiting I decided to use a different Carter , I had my old Carb the 9635SA or the 1405 which is the same.
I tried to change out the venturi's and squiter and jets rods to a 389 pontiac it didn't fare so good, the idle was real rough. I found in the carb a passage that's part of the idle circiut blocked, cleaned it out and went back to base Calib. and decided to try it and I had a bog at accel. off idle so I tried the rods out of a 1406 just the rods and WOW, I got a chirp when I released the brake and punched it and no bog even when the secondaries kicked in, just trans shifted hard into third, but WOW.
This carb the AFB 9635SA almost performed as good as the AVS does.

Your jets, squirters, and rods all have pn's and sizes... just to give a useful reference.

Btw, if everything else is tuned right and you have an off idle bog, try a larger squirter. Its usually only a problem with large cams though.
The problem was the idle passage from the venturi was blocked and I didn't know it til I tore it down and for the heck of it blew air through it.
I reassembled it back to base configuration and still had a bog with base I tried just changes the rods and the bog disappeared. The 9635 is a universal carb and was never tuned in for my engine, it's for 302 to 400's but needs to be fine tuned. I always had a bog even with the Edelbrocks, off idle it would hesitate then kick in. I know they say the squirter or moving the accelerator one hole. I seem to find a sweet spot, now to try other things like you said.
