LATECK is right . In all likelihood you've got a bad compressor. That is assuming that all the nuts and bolts holding the compressor and bracketry are tight.
A bad bearing would make a light to heavy roaring sound depending the condition of the bearing with the compressor disengaged.

|LATECH||Sounds like the compressor is noisy. The clutch wont act like you are describing.|

General A/C clutch question
If the A/C compressor only makes noise when the clutch is engaged, could the issue still be in the pulley/clutch bearing?
The car is a 2007 Ford 500. The noise increases equally with engine rpm, but only with the clutch engaged.
