I have a '53 Willy's pickup I've been wanting to re-build for some time now. Now that I have the time, and some money, I'm not sure what to do with it. I had wanted to make a regular 2wd pickup to drive around using parts off of my '88 Chevy. Turns out the rear axle from the Chevy isn't wide enough to match the Willy's frame. I need something at least 58''. Should I just make a street rod using a Pontiac axle? Thoughts?
i used a 9in ford rear axle from a 1979 mercury cougar in my 55 willys truck. The width is 59in backing plate to backing plate. It appears you are wanting to use a GM axle, but in a pinch you could re-drill the lugs on the ford axle to a GM lug pattern
I don't have any pictures as of yet. I have everything stripped down to the frame. Thanks for the suggestions. I have a lot to look into.
