A 650 hp 540 would run high 10s at 3550 pounds.
3000 pound car would need 550 hp

Its possible to build 550 HP and use the 454 crank in a 396 block, wow. why? build a 540,,,or spend some time and money on an odd combination.
Let us know what direction you will take?
I missed the 10 second ET wish in the first post and said,yes,550 hp is do able.
I would guess a 550 HP odd ball stroker would go low 11s

where did ten second E.T.s come in?
better build a 540 so you have enough HP. A 650 H P 540 would get you there

I'd much sooner chase 500 hp with the 396, than with a small bore that you're wanting to do. The 396 bored over will give you a better winding engine, and it can be built to get there also. Your biggest drawback to reaching 10's will be the 3700 lb. Camaro. Even with major lightening the fellas I know racing them are still in the 3300 lb. range. Mine is 3500, but it's a '71 and started a bit lighter than a '76.
My best times with a "normal" 427 BBC were low 12's and high 11's occasionally. But I drove mine daily to work, and couldn't build or strip it to try and reach 10's.

post number 4?
all you need is a decent set of anybodys heads,
any heads that flow 280 ish plus CFM intake side will give you 550 hp potential.
the small AFRs would be very street friendly

so Brodix has emailed me back and suggested a set of heads and intake that would be best for me. They told me to contact a cam company to figure out what i need. I still have yet to hear from AFR. So looks like im going with Brodix.
these heads rr bb-0 Race-RiteŽ Big Block Series Cylinder Heads/26°
this intake manifold HV2017 Brodix HV2017
still not sure on cam, carb, or bottom end.
those heads pushed a 540bbc to 624hp and 644ft lbs at 10:5 cr and a hyrdaulic roller cam. he also emailed me a dyno chart for that setup

|BigBlock76Fbody||I contacted AFR, and Brodix and still no reply. I left a message on their tech line and emailed them.....waiting.....waiting....waiting. The brodix facebook page is active because they replied to me giving their email but nothing from them yet|

|vinniekq2||550 horse BB is not rocket science.Just find heads that flow around 285 plus cfm on the intake side with moderate size intake runners|

|BigBlock76Fbody||I contacted AFR today, via email and phone number, just waiting on them to call back to reccomend stuff with their heads. I also contacted Brodix i've heard theyre the way to go for big blocks|

polish the rods and add arp bolts and resize.. maybe bush the small end.
spend your money on good pistons and roller cam..
bbc rec port heads off a 454 or even oval ports will do . no need to spend big money on new aftermarket heads..
if it was me, I'd look at the date codes on the block and head you have..
and the engine code and maybe sell it to a guy thats retoring a car that needs a correct date parts..
then get a 454 and build it or make a 489/496
with the money you plan at throwing at the 396 with all new parts you'll still only have a 402.
if hell bent on the 396, you don't need new parts, use whats there.. get good 454 iron heads and rebuild them.. no need to drop 2000.oo on alum heads for a 396.. of $$$ crank/rods
it's a little odd that you are say'n 454 cores are costly but want to buy 2000.oo+ heads and 1000.00 in roller cam+ new crank/rods ect into the 396
my 454 was 800.oo but it was a running fully dressed engine..
