|TMF Lindbeck||Have you had the battery on a load tester? They will show fully charged then crap out under load if it has a bad cell. Most all parts stores will load test for free and if you do need a new one the core is right there|

|crownver||Yeah, but OP says when he got it turning by hand, the starter turned it and it started and ran after burning off whatever it is. Wouldn't do that with a spun bearing.|

318 not turning over
Put on a new battery and starter ,,cleaned all the connections . Would a bad bearing or something internal of the motor cause this problem?

|crownver||If it still won't turn over with the plugs out I'd be checking the connections on the starter/battery. This is a strange problem.|

|crownver||My guess is you're leaking enough coolant (or oil I guess) into 1 or more cylinders to raise the static pressure high enough to prevent the starter from turning the motor. Once you turn it over by hand a couple of times, you clear enough of it to start it. The rest burns off and it's good until it sits and leaks more into the cylinder.|

All the fluids look good . it dosnt over heat. The motor sounds ok, the smoke is coming from the tail pipe
thanks . it has a oil light no gauge ,the light is not on.

|vinniekq2||how is the oil pressure? Is there any noises?where is the smoke coming from? exhaust,engine bay? Does it over heat? all fluid levels are good? what doesnt look right?|

1988 318 not cranking over
I know this is not a hot rod ,but I have always gotten good answers here.My father in law van has a 1988 dodge van with a 318 in it .He thought he had a bad battery or starter. I replaced both and the motor still wont crank over .The starter is kicking in and the battery has a full charge. We got the starter to work on the bench and I rechaged the battery so I believe they are both ok.
I turned the motor over by hand ,and by the way was VERY hard to do . After I did the motor cranked over slow at first ,then started. It smoke like hell for about 5 minutes. We ran it for about half hour ,shut it off and it restarted.
Then the next morning it was doing the same thing it was.
My question is ,,is the some internal parts of the motor that would "lock" up the motor? If I turn it over by hand it will crank slowly then start .
Any help would be great
