You will need a custom built converter designed to give about a 3200 stall speed behind the 327.
You want a "lock up" style converter based on a 245MM case diameter. You don't have near enough gear in the car.
Get some 4.10's and overdrive will have a usfull purpose and the car will be a lot more fun.
The lock up function allows the overdrive to function properly for efficient cruising .

For a cruiser with OD you want a converter that stalls slightly below your cruise rpm at highway speeds. Assuming a .67 OD, 3.42 gear and 26" tall tire your cruise rpm at 65 mph will be 1926 rpm. In reality it will probably be slightly higher due to converter inefficiency (slip). IMO in a car intended for mostly street use you would want more rear gear to run a 3000 rpm stall converter unless you don't mind a whole bunch of slip (heat) at cruise.
What ever converter you choose make sure you run a good tranny cooler.

Torque converter stall help needed
I need some help trying to determine what stall converter to get. I've been reading old threads for the past hour about stall selection, but I haven't been able to find a similar engine build that is in a similar weight car.
Here is what I have : 77 Pontiac Astre (Vega lookalike) with a 327, 2004R trans with 3.42 gear with 26" tires. The car weighs 2700lbs with a driver.
The compression is 9.6:1, .468/480 lift with 220/231 duration at .050, plus 1.6 rockers. We've had it on a Mustang dyno and the max torque rpm is around 4200 and max hp is around 5300. The max torque was about 300 and hp is about 315 when it was on the dyno, but we've done some more tuning and it is a little better than that now (haven't been back to the dyno yet.)
The cam card says to use a 2000 stall, but I think that figure is based on a 350-400 sbc and a heavier vehicle. The trans that was in it until winter was a used bone stock 2004R with a used stock converter-$50 from the local u pull it. They are presently shot - front pump leaking and noisy in 1st gear - hence the need for the rebuild and new converter!
I'm sure, or pretty sure, that the stock converter was too low of a stall based on that it was quite an event to get this slowed down to stop because the converter was stalled when slowing down to 800 rpm's.
From what I've read, I THINK, a 3000 stall would be OK for both launch and cruising, and oh yeah, this is mostly a cruiser/tire burner. I'm not worried about 1/4 mile times and 60 ft times (too much.)
