Any idea what your buddy used to "flush it out"? If he used a solvent that dissolved the red stuff and then he didn't get all the solvent out that's no doubt the issue.

What I've done in the past is take the gas tank to a radiator shop and have it flushed and then evaluated.

MARTINSR I have seen those tank sealers to cause a lot of trouble from peeling off, but never saw it turn fuel red!

Old gas tank has red sealer?

I purchased a 1940 that had been sitting for about 16 years. A buddy of mine too out the gas tank and he stated that it had what seemed to be a blood red sealer like substance in the tank. He flushed it out and re-installed the tank. I connected the hoses and started the car. Car started just fine but I did notice that the fuel coming into the carb was also red.
I took out the tank and getting ready to flush clean and re-install. Does anyone know what this reddish stuff is? Can it be of any harm when running this red fuel through the carburetor?
The tank is not leaking and there seems to be read all around the inside of the tank. I stuck a long screwdriver in to see if I can scratch any of this red stuff off but it did not.. looks like its stuck pretty good to the walls of the tank.
