beertracker If the carb is a q-jet check the power piston spring. If the spring is too strong it will raise the primary jets at idle. More on this in cliff's book.

Make sure the secondary throttle plates are fully closed at idle. The secondary plates are closed by a coil spring on the secondary shaft. Just rebend the spring so more force is applied to the shaft. This is the problem I had on my q-jet & it took a long time to find it.

poncho62 The mechanical advance is the springs and weights inside the distributor......

Also check for cracked or broken vacuum lines.

cadillacdave1 Also check the return springs on the carb throttle. If the spring is weak or binding on something it can also cause a high idle.

82_CUTTINGEVERYTHIN mechanical advance ? .. the wires to the spark plugs or are there other wires to the distributor ??

DoubleVision Check the mechanical advance in the distributor, if it's developed a sticky spot, it can stick with the timing advanced a ways causing a high idle.
Also check for excessively worn primary throttle shafts on the carb.
