Some of the early cruise contols actually worked off of a drive mounted on the firewall. The speedo cable went to the firewall to the cruise adapter and then from the firewall to the speedo. Bottom line is your idea should work fine.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.
I am thinking I can attach a short mechanical cable (I hope I can get it in there between linkage), then install the convertor on the other end of the cable, which will enable me to run a wire to the electric speedo?
If so, just need to figure a way to support/mount the short cable/convertor assembly.....

I've used offset ratio adaptors to miss linkage before. They make 90* ones too. MIght find something here that would work.

Room for a speedo-cable on Muncie M20?
So, nearing completion of the tranny swap-(700R4 to Muncie M20). I currently have an electric speedometer, and the Muncie takes a mechanical cable. Just install the conversion kit right? So I bought one, and there's no room to fit it between the shift linkage. In fact, being a newbie at this, is there really any room for a mechanical cable? (Do I need to change the speedo to a mechanical?)
