I have HO, not the "real thing". Someone had an amazing track here in town though. We are talking a few road courses, a drag strip, and a HUGE oval that was up going around the room above the other tracks. You went up into a mezzanine to race your car around the oval. And the records were CRAZY like a few seconds around this upper track.
I remember cars like this doing it in seconds! It was a blur, you could barely even see the car it was going around the track so fast.

Lived and breathed slot cars from about 10yr old. I was on a "travel team" subsidized by a local hobby shop. I wound my own armatures, ground magnets, made my own tires using silicon bathtub caulking in a mold. 50yr later I still have my old hand controller and one 1/24 stock car that I keep for nostalgia.
I did not realize it was so high tech now, rebuilding motors after a race, crazy!!

Did 'em as a kid, then rediscovered them in the '90s. Went knuts, ended up racing in the USRA series in FL. Crazy fast...
Still love the old "RTR" (ready-to-run) cars. The #9 car is a Cox Chaparral:
Below is what I was racing in the series. Hand assembled motors are around $300.00 each, you need two or three per race (they're rebuilt afterwards):
I'm almost scared to register to play- I can see hours evaporating already!

I did spend a lot of time with a slot car track that is for sure. Still have some of them and the carrying case.
