|club327||I have toyed with that idea of going the 327 route too......but being human and never satisfied, I'd wanna go all the way and have the 350 crank or even the monster 383! The only thing in the 307's favor right now is that the pick up that it's in weighs very little, about 1250kg's (2800 pounds?), and scoots along quite nicely thank you very much. The pick up is not unlike your El Camino and in fact, fooled a Canadian friend who thought it was just that. We have a few importers over here that sell used engines and parts. I might inquire. I'll give you an example of what we pay over here (Aus currency). Vortec heads $1100 or $1350 for upgraded ones. $350 for a performer manifold. Crane camshaft $300+ and not including lifters. Chevy high performance magazine $10.00......your price? $3.99. When you add 25% for the currency loss and freight there still should be change left over. Anyway, I did myself a favor and bought $200 US worth of parts from Northernautoparts which came to $295 Aus including $35 freight. Was at my door step in about 31/2 weeks. Now if they could ship those heads over I'd be over the moon! I've heard your comments about the Pro Lightning heads. Is that founded yet? Or is it just that no one's accepting these foreigns items ( they're from New Zealand I believe). Looking at some engine combos, I've seen the sportsman II heads to have much more performance capability for not much more cost. I reckon they would be the trick and would be ideal for if ever I choose to go up in cubes. Bye for now. Rob|

|DoubleVision||I agree with Bob, the vortecs like to crack, I`ve seen one pair that was cracked in 5 places. as for the 307 goes, if you want a 327, get a 350 block and use the 307 crank, order a set of 327 pistons and you have a 327.|

|Robinson Robin||Yup my vote goes to the world's S/R heads too. They make up for their slightly less performance in much better quality.|

Thanks to all who chose to answer my question. It pretty much sums up what I had thought. That the Vortecs have a slight edge in performance and efficiency, but the Worlds are better in every other area particularly quality, compatability and durability.
The only reason I would choose the Vortecs would be if I ever updated my block to a 350 or 383, and that I do not know! Again thanks.

|BOBCRMAN@aol.com||If you are going to spend the money go with the SR Torker. These are so much better quality casting there is no comparison. Plus they have a thick deck and are FAR more crack proof than the Vortec. Seems the last half dozen Vortecs I've magged have been broken/cracked.|

The s/r heads will bolt up to your stock parts, but I assume that you will be getting an aftermarket intake manifold when you buy the new set of heads anyway. From what I have seen, the Vortecs will make more hp and torque than the s/r's. I had a 355 with vortec heads and I loved it. Below is a website that has alot of different engine combonations so you can compare the heads you are looking at and make your decision. If you buy the vortecs, buy them from Scoggin Dickey. You would need to get the heads with the upgraded spring package which will require machine work. Scoggin Dickey offers a set of Vortec heads with the machine work and springs that can handle up to .525 lift for $635 for the assembeled set.

|machine shop tom||No the 307 can't be bored to 4.00". Go with the S/R Torquers. They have screw-in studs, are set up better for springs, and use a "normal" manifold.|

vortec or world s/r torquer heads?
Not so long ago I discovered that the pickup my friend had sold me has a 307, and not the 327 as claimed. It's a Canadian casting but I don't have the numbers here with me right now. It's not his fault as the auction house and previous owner before him claimed that it was a 327, and I got the pamphlet to prove it. I guess I should change my name to club307, he he!
Anyway I'm wanting to dump the truck heads as they've got 70cc chambers and small valves. The RH head also has a huge crack below the exhaust ports, but thankfully it barely weeps any coolant at all! I love the results I've read about the vortec heads and am willing to put up with all the changes required to run them. However, I've also seen that World products make dedicated heads for the small bore SBC such as the 305 and 307. These I believe have large valves (1.940" + 1.500"), use standard type manifolds, valve covers and rockers. They also have 58cc combustion chambers which really do it for me! The part number is 955-042650. Please don't suggest that I go for a 350, 400, 383 or whatever coz I'm not going to pay the $800 we are charged over here for a bare used 350 block.
Another friend of mine has said that it could also have been bored 4inches to make it a 327, but I told him that these cylinders are too thin for that. But as he's into building competition engines and knows something, he says that he's done that to quite a few 307's over here. Mind you it's the Australian cast 307's that he reckons are capable for over boring coz of the thicker walls. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Rob
