just another car guy be careful about who you get your crate/rebuilt motor from, some of those guys are pretty scary when it comes to the tolerances they allow. I was going to order one until I found this out, you can upgrade to one with better tolerances but the price jumps way up, close to what it costs to rebuild it yourself.
I tell you though to hear your motor rumbling & loping at an idle and to know that YOU built it it a nice feeling

chevelle_502 One of the biggest issues is time and ability. Buying a crate is quicker and requires less out of yer ability. You have to decide what you can handle. the 351w is a bad *** motor but it is always cool as hell to tell someone you just have a 302 when youve built a hell of a motor. Its just personal preference. Good luck man.

Dejavu The Crate is really tempting especially since it seem like every 1 hour job turns into a 1 1/2 day job. The 351 will have some space problems but will yield a lot more power without much tweaking compared to the 302. I'm going to start crunching numbers and see where I get more bang for my buck.
Thanks,
Fred

mstngjoe You don't say how the car will be used or the performance level you are seeking, but since you're considering a 351W swap I'd guess you want to build some hp.

The 351W will fit the '65 Mustang engine bay.......However, be prepared for header/hood clearance issues along with other physical differences when using the 351W.

OTOH, you can make decent power for the street with a 302/306 if you match up your parts to work together.

And....don't forget the stroker option.

Rebuild or Crate?

As part of the of my project, I am pulling the 1976 302 out of my 66 Mustang, it probably needs a total rebuild. I know it would be cheaper to buy a crate engine and I am tempted to go for a 351W (a little more expensive). Has anybody done this swap? I know there is some deck height issues, and the 302 is already a little tight. Any feedback (other than dropping in a Hemi) would be greatly appreciated.
