Hey guys I just bought a 49 Chevy and I want to go to a V-8 from the 6 Cyl. that is in it.
A question or two if you don't mind.
1) Will a small block fit in that space without alot of cutting?
2) Will a big block fit in there.
I have one of each and they are both good motors but I don't want to cut the car all up to do this.
If anyone has any tips of tricks for me that would be great.
Thanks.

Is my crossmember not good enough? Does it not allow the clearance I need? Where would I get an aftermarket one?
Sorry for all the questions but this is all new to me.
Unless someone has updated the drivetrain in your car, it will have front mounts on the engine and mounts under the bellhousing. You can put front mounts on a small block but this will overstress the trans when using a modern rear mount on the tranny. A universal crossmember will help stiffen the frame and hold the engine solidly in place! The best thing to do is check out www.speedwaymotors.com online. They carry many specific swap parts and numerous universal pieces to make swaps a snap! Heaven knows, I have many speedway parts in the old Rumbler!
My 53 Chevy has a V8 transplant. I used Sanderson headers to clear the steering, needed room for the valve covers so only minimal body cutting for clearance at the firewall. I don't know what type motor mounts it has, but I put the cross member mount in my 37 Dodge and installed a 327sbc with no problem.
