Thanks for the replies.....The 454 will be installed probably in 2-3 years so I'm just going to forget about it until that day is here.
You're right about the cam, too much of it on the street. When the existing tranny was working, the car responded pretty good. My buddy tried to race me with his rice acura gsr. He took off first and by the end of 2nd gear it was over. I EASILY had him by 5-6 car length. The funny thing is that I didn't really floor it.
I did take it to an empty stretch of road. I maped out a quarter mile and timed it. When I took off the wheels slipped a little but caught about a half second later. This time I did floor it and I heard something I have never heard before. It sounded like a freight train inside the tunnel ram. Air just rushing into the tunnel ram via dual carbs. I just let go of the gas, remembered of the time and stepped on it again. Honestly, I didn't have the pedal all the way down, the tunnel ram noise just spooked me. I finished with a stopwatch time of 13.86. I know I could of went faster......So what was I talking about...Oh yeah my cam.
I think it's good for the strip but I want something I can drive around town without having the cops look at me with a "Should I stop him" look on there faces. Also, the tranny that I want to get is not recommended for supercharger use. Now if I do install the 454 I will have a blower on it. What tranny would you recommend that will handle the my existing engine and the future one?

If you want a tough convertor that will hold whatever you put in front of it give Torco in Abilene, TX a call. From what I am told they bought Art Carr a while back and now build their convertors with the same stuff as Art Carr uses. I bought one of their convertors for my S-10 and it is the nicest one I have owned. It is 100% better quality than the TCI's from an external standpoint. They actually use a one piece billet rear plate that is the back of the convertor, hub, and mounting tabs all in one. I told them that the convertor would see 800lb/ft of torque and the just said "no problem". My 10" convertor was $325 shipped to my door step and comes with a guarantee to stall to the designed speed or they will restall it. They will also rebuild the convertor at any time for $100 regardless of condition.
Of course, when you order the convertor they are going to want to know everything about your car. If I were you, I would have it built for the big engine. If you get it stalled for the small engine, it will stall alot higher with the big engine. Stall speed is simply a result of the amount of torque that is applied.....that simple.

How far in the future are you planning on building this 454? If it's a couple years or more I wouldn't bother trying to compromise between what you need now and what you'll need then. Buy exactly what you need now, and then if your needs change in the future, by what you need then. In my opinion you'll be happier if you buy a torque converter for you exact application now. I'd say around 3000 stall would be about right. About the cam, if you don't know what it is, don't put it in. Cam need to be matched to the rest of the engine/drivetrain. If you put in a cam that's too big the engine will sound cool, but it will be much slower. Everything should be matched up, again why I say to worry about the 454 when you get there.
As for the tranny, I've never used that tci tranny, but it's probably decent. I'd use it for now and upgrade and use it or sell it when it comes time for the 454.

I am also thinking of changing the cam on my car. It was givin to me by my brother. He bought a 68 camaro that was used for the strip, but street legal. He pulled the engine and tranny and installed it in this Nova (Camaro body very rusted).
The engine has a very radical idle(sounds like popcorn poping). I don't know the specs but I feel bad for the cars behind me at the stop light because of the exhaust fumes are very strong (smells like gas). I just want a low rumble at idle without the bad gas smell. What cam & converter would you recommend? What converter would also be good for my existing 350 and reuse on my 454?

|arch||If you want a quarter mile time, then the higher the number of the first gear, the faster you will go through it. Therefor quicker 1/4 mile times. For the stall speed you will need two different converters, one for the 350 and one for the 454. To determine what stall would be good for your car you need to know what the powerband of each engine is and where the peak power is at. The cam and the converter go hand in hand. Longer the duration on the cam, Higher stall speed. (I said that right, right? (4:30am, sounds good now)) Tell us where the power is on each motor so you can get a good recomendation on a stall speed. Personally, I've never been a fan of TCI products, but I know alot of others that have the exact oppisite opinion.|

TCI Streetfighter rated HP use
I am interested in purchasing a TCI Streetfighter th-350 tranny http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...06&prmenbr=361 . It is rated for non-supercharged or nitrous engines making less that 450hp. I have a 72 Nova that has a sbc 350. I think it's probably making somewhere between 300-400hp. In the distant future, my plans are to install a blown 454 on my Nova. I plan on making somewhere between 450-550hp. I don't plan on racing it much, maybe once or twice a year, just mainly a weekend driver.
Do you guys think that tranny will handle it if I don't abuse it or what tranny would you recommend and were can I purchase it? I have read that people install blowers on there Iroc's and using the stock tranny with no problems. I have a budget of $800, any ideas? I also noticed that TCI sells the same tranny with 2.75 (1st gear) for $300 more. I currently have 3.75 rearend, would the $300 more tranny be worth it or should I not bother and why? What is the big deal about having that for a first gear? One more thing, what would be a recommended torque converter (stall speed) for my current and future application?
