Trim-man Not only should you have it installed professionally, let the trimmer remove the old top and mouldings. Many of the older GM clips for the vinyl top trim mouldings are no longer available. Without the proper knowledge and tools, you can create yourself some major headaches down the road.

BOBCRMAN@aol.com As far as I know there are no vinyl top "kits". As this is a specialized procedure. Vinyl tops are usually bought as "replacement" tops (ready made to fit). Or hand made by the trimmer to fit the application.

Installation procedures are in the Hotrodders Archives. This job is not for the novice.

Wmarden my 74 had the rust bubbles. No rust through, but it does have lots of rust scale that needs removing. I am half a mind to get rid of the vinyl top and half a mind to put on a new one. Sorry I can't help with the repair side of things, but I haven't gotten that far yet.

poncho62 It probably is rust.............Back then, they didn't treat or rustproof on the metal of the roofs that were going to get vinyl.

I remember, I had little rust bumps under my 70 Chevelle roof..........and that was in 1975.

Vinyl roof redo.

OK I have discovered my '70 Caddy Coupe Deville has something going on under the vinyl top. Whether its rust, or the vinyl is just coming up off of the roof, I'm not sure.

I kinda doubt there is rust, because the rest of the car is nearly rust free (a little behind the fender skirts). I have not decided whether I'm going to remove the top, and just leave it steel, or redo the vinyl. Kinda depends how hard redoing the vinyl is.

I would like the car to remain basically stock, not doing anything irriversible. I plan on lowering the car, and running some big 17" wires, but other than that leave it bone stock.

OK, the question. Do you have to buy a kit specific for the car. Or do you buy a sheet of this vinyl material, and stretch and glue it on. I really have no experience with this. I Mean I've taken them off in the past (what a headache) but never restored one. We're starting on the car in the next week or so, so I'll put up some pics of it, And the resto.
