dklong it sounds like you have a signal light switch problem.
the brake light switch , goes through the signal light switch, then goes to the brake lights.
the reason why the brake lights are staying on, is usally because the hazzard switch ( 4 way lights ) is screwed up,( I have seen only rear brake lights flash when the switch was turned on or the front only flash ) .
when you depress the brake pedal and only one brake light comes on and the wiring and the bulb is good , this is an other indication that the signal light switch is bad.
the brake light fuse has power all the time. the fuse you are looking at mite be the antilock brake fuse.

jmtw If I can't figure this out, i'm going to have to take it to the shop (hopefully! they won't say it's the anti-lock braking system ).
I'll let you know what I find out.

In my case it was not.

could be that, but seems too coincidental with his replacing the booster and the brake lights staying on. But, that's an idea. I need to check and see if he knocked some wire loose or something.

yup, it's the brake lights.

302 Z28 I had that problem once when my 90 Chevy truck was still in warranty. It was the anti-lock module. Glad I didn't have to buy that sucker.

brake lights stay on....

Hi guys.
On a 1990 Z71, the brake lights are staying on.
I checked the brake light switch, and it's working.

This is my son's truck. I think it all started when he had to lower the steering column to install a new brake booster.

I figure something got pinched or something, but can't find the problem.
I checked the brake light switch wires, and when it's depressed, only one has juice, so that leaves out one of those wires being pinched.

oddly enough, on the fuse box, the fuse for the brake lights doesn't get juice until the key is on. can someone explain this? odd, because you don't need the key on to make brake lights work. BTW, the brake lights are staying on regardless of what position the key is in.

anyway, any help is appreciated
