Hi ! I have a friend who have a dodge monaco 1978 with a 318 4 brl. He have a Electronic Spark control system and he want to know how to by-pass it to remove it. I know originally, that box is fixed on the air filter box. Thanks
Well,I was going to find a schematic, but the Chrysler box is not unpacked yet. Hang on and someone will answer it. I am not familiar with the Chrysler electronic ignition set ups.
You will need the dist, control box (module), and harness from a non lean burn system off something like and 82 small block dodge engine. There are articles about this conversion on Moparchat, Allpar, and Ramchargercentral forums. Or type "lean burn conversion" on Goggle and you will get a lot of links for specific help.
can you post a picture of your car the monaco? i run msd on a externally regulated mopar. the original wiring isnt really used. the coil wire for a key-on signal maybe. ask doc imp: about grounds, his method is solid.
MSD system needs a competent ground. also the MSD needs solid 12 volts. so if its externally voltage regulated you cant hook it to the flucuating 11volts provided.
use 10 Ga. wires to the battery, and ground, with a 20 amp fuse.
MSD can provide the diagram ,or hold on ill scan my instructions.
you are using one of the MSD 6al boxes right? do you have a MSD dizzy? or what are you asking?
If you want to do this the absolute easiest way you can, go to a reputable Dodge dealer. Mopar makes a kit to eliminate the lean burn computer set up. I have instaled several, it is so easy, you'll almost cry. The kit comes with a distributor, ign modual, harness, and a detailed instruction page with a diagram.
SBChevfreak is right on,but if you don't want to drop the $300,the local Dodge dealer can sell you just the harness p/n P3690152,the ECU,a ballast resistor, and a reman distributor, and you can plead with him to give you a copy of the directions. The wiring is VERY straightforward, the only trick is knowing which wire coming out of the firewall bulkhead plug you need to splice into, and the Mopar kit instructions give a map of that. One caveat,to do this swap really right, you should change carbs to one with a ported vacuum source,as manifold vacuum doesn't allow the advance in the dist to work properly.
