Help can you fix a sticking distributor

Hey guys I was just playing around with my car today and happen to take my Accel HEI distributor apart and noticed that the mechanical advance is sticking. when I open them by hand and let them go they will not return at all. I was wondering if there is a way to fix this problem. or some type of quick fix. Any help is appreciated thanks..

Mechanical Advance

Doc here, :pimp:

Can you see anything hitting the advance plate, like wires ect..or signs of other wear?

Are the weights and pegs covered in rust?

You can Remove the ECM, And CAREFULLY spray the Advance plates With first, a bit of Carb cleaner. Be careful not to get the Reluctor and Magnetic Pick up soaked (the plastic/epoxy resins may not be conducive to carb cleaner chemicals). use the pin point nozzle to spray the mounting pegs and plate faces.

Then with a very small acid brush or tooth brush, Clean all the pivot points and mating surfaces of rust and corrosion. Work the Advance plate back and fourth as you do this.

When the plates and pivot points are clean, CAREFULLY spray with a bit of WD~40 or SIMULAR penetrating oil, let it sit a while (overnight would be good, but at least an hour) Check the movement occasionally during the "Soak" period by working the plate back and fourth.

After it has soaked in well, and the plate functions well, CLEAN ALL of the Penetrating oil OUT of the inside Distributor. If you leave any "Wet" oil in there, it will spatter all over the rotating parts, and may Cover the rotor and cap in oil trails...causing gross misfires and backfires..

once that is done get some HIGH TEMP grease, and use no more than a TINY dab on the end of a Q~Tip, grease the advance plate pegs where they mate at the advance plate. Work it back and fourth several times and wipe off any excess.

Reinstall The ECM, clean the old silicone grease from the bottom of the brick and generously (but not sloppy ) apply new grease before you mount it...Don't forget the Heat sink compound! Your ECM will burn up without it!

Reinstall the rotor and cap and test it out. If you don't achieve the desired results, you may have to (If so equipped) remove the advance plate springs and lift the plates and replace the Teflon bushings on the pegs (again, if so equipped)

Hope it helps!
