Correct me if I'm wrong... (10bolt thread, gear swap cost/carrier compatability)
Is it just me or are all shops this bad nowadays? Here's the deal-
So I'm gearing up to swap the gears in my 77 8.5" 10-bolt 2.73 rear end. The person who had this car before me put a posi in it (for whatever reason, this guy decided a 2.42 to 2.73 posi swap was the thing to do...) so I don't need to buy a posi unit. Furthermore, everybody on this and any other board has told me when I asked, that the carrier I have for the 2.73 gears will also work for anything up to but not including 4.11 gears. I'm buying the gears from a buddy for a good deal (richmond 3.73's).
So I called 3 shops that are close to where the car is being stored, just for the convenience factor. Here's what they tell me:
First shop says "no, your carrier will definitely not work, its only good to something like 3.08's. If you can get me the proper carrier and parts, I"ll set it up for around 200 bucks."
Second shop says "well since you bought the parts I won't warranty the job. Your carrier will be fine. If you get me all the parts and the kit you're looking at 5-700 dollars." What the...???
Third shop "not sure if your carrier will work, maybe we can shim it or something. If you get me all the parts I'll set it up for 250."
Those are 3 very different answers, is this really that hard of a question to answer? Am I missing something here?
