Need Help Building a Chevy 383.
Thanx Doc for the information. I really want a radical street rod and yes this truck will be used 90% of the time on the street.

Well first of all street/strip is a relative term. It depends on your definition of what constitutes a street engine. Its really just a matter of how radical a combination your willing to endure on the street and how often it will be street driven. Some people build pretty radical engines for the street that idle rough at 1200 rpm and some prefer a smoother idle at the expense of power. I think you need to be abit more specific as to whether this truck is going to be more street or more strip. Also what horsepower numbers are you looking for. With your truck being a 1957 vintage emissions dont apply so it leaves the possibilities wide open.

Need Help Building A Chevy 383
The 383 is for a 1957 Chevy Truck 1300 Gentlemen. As for the transmission I do have a TCI Super Street Fighter 400. The rear is a Dana 44 that I plan to convert to posi traction.

Try searching the site there is about 100 post of a 383 by now. Go HERE for lots of set ups. There are some set up on there with dart heads.
First thing is what car is this going into?
Rear end? Gear ratio?
Those type of things help find what direction to go in. Your set up will be based on the car and its purpose. Yours being street/strip your going to have a decent cam. heads in the 180-195 cc range to feed the 383. All this will make great power and em...
As for passing the em. test thats pretty simple... For the test put on cats... then when your done with the test swap in the straight pipe. It works like a charm.

Your pistons will be the determining factor for your final cr, combined with your chamber cc's. You need to know what your emissions standard is in TX, up here it's dependant upon the year of the car which test is required, i.e. no test for '67 and older cars, tail pipe sniff only and full blown testing to the point it has to have the original air cleaner installed or you have to go to the referee station. Fortunately we can get a seasonal waiver and have no test requirements if it's not driven during the winter months for $18.00.
Many of the parts you buy can be CARB certified but there are so many variables that can throw emissions through the roof it could make passing any test impossible if the state requirement is tough.

Help Building A Chevy 383.
I need somebody to help me figure out how to build a street/strip 383 that will pass emission standards. I plan on using Dart cast iron heads and I already have an Eagle 4340 forged crankshaft and Eagle forged H beam rods. I was thinking of buying the 215/64 Platinum Iron Eagle Heads. Would these heads create to much compression? Or should I purchase the 215/72 heads? If anybody out there can get me a combination list for a 383 this would be greatly appreciated. This 383 will see street/strip duty.
