|Blazin72||If you do any kind of repairs to that block the engine really should be disassembled to keep debris from making its way into the rest of the engine. If you disassemble the engine then you might as well replace the block. I can see doing something like that to an engine that is a little harder to come by like an old flathead or something of that nature, but on a 350? They're all over the place. It may cost a little bit for machine work and stuff but save yourself the time of having to pull an engine apart twice. Theres no guarantee on how long the repair is going to last either.|

I've got a cerami-sealed modified engine in my car right now.
I've fixed many blocks(exterior cracks) with epoxy.
Welding will work for a while.
Stitching works too.
Best way not to spend much money IMO. grind out the crack and flash the oil out with a torch. Clean with mineral spirit's or the like and JB weld er up. Wait a few day's a nd use a bottle of glass sealer. If the crack isn't to bad it'll work probably through the winter. But in the end, you still got a crack.

|TurboS10||Welding would be the only option. I still would not do it. It will likely keep cracking. How do you know there are not cracks you can not see??|

I agree with Blazin72 JB Weld is good for certain things but in this case I suggest a new engine block. Its like putting perfume on a pig in the end its still a pig. So patch it up if you like but in the end there is still a crack.

I used JB Weld once. Just about lost a brand new engine because of it too. At the time I put the engine together I didnt have a welder and somebody said to just use JB weld to attach the oil pump pickup to the oil pump. About two months later I noticed that my oil pressure was almost non-existent. I pulled the oil pan and found the pickup just about ready to fall out of the pump. The JB Weld was a bad idea.
In your case I think it's just time for a new block. Water will probably still manage to find its way past the JB Weld.
Besides...if you're gonna be grinding in the lifter valley you're gonna have to pull the engine apart anyway. Unless you want metal debris in your engine.

Cracked water jacket
72 Chevelle...350.....The ice in my engine expanded and cracked the water jacket inside the valley. The crack is an L shaped crack on both sides of the valley right above the no. 1 & 3, on one side, and the 2 & 4 spark plug on the other. I heard from a neighbor that I could drill a hole at each end of the crack to stop it from running, grind along the crack a little to make it easier to fill, and then fill it all in with JB weld for a quick fix that would let me buy some time to get a new block since this is mine and my wife's second car for work. He swears by it. I thought i'd get a second opinion before I waisted my time. What do you guys out there think???
