is it worth it and actually possible to install limited slip set up and steep gears in my 7.5" rear end. it is the stock rear end from my 81 pontiac. what are other stouter rear ends that can be had and installed for cheap? thanks for your help
Don't know if it;s still the same but Pontiac used
to make two axle housings, high gear ratio 2:56
to maybe 3:08 you can not put any other gears in this housing like 3:55, won"t fit. If you have say 3:73 limited slip you would need housing from
3:23 thru 4:11 and the same was true if wanting to go from low gears to high gears. Was easier to find complete axle assy, already set up than to switch gears to radically(low to high, high to low).I got my 3:55 limited slip for 75.00 complete.Don"t know your location but wrecking yards, pull and saves are great scorces of cost effective upgrades.again this is how Pontiac used
to be, don't know for sure now
Call the manufacturers of limites slip units. Eaton, Powertrax etc. and ask them. They know. However, the 7.5 and 7.75 rears are notoriously weak at the ring and pinion. If you are going to change, at least go to a 10 bolt and if you have a lot of power, a 12 bolt. Chevy still makes 7.5 rears in S-10's that are posi units. They are nearly give aways at the junk yard now.
Deja vue.
I'm from Vancouver and I replaced the diff in my 81 GP a few years ago. I bought a posi unit from a monte carlo for $70. Then I paid a bit too much to put a new auburn posi and new gears in it. No problems since though...
I have a set of 410s that fit the 273 to 308 7.5 rear it doesent have a posi unit but the spyders are welded in the carrier, the gears are just about new and will fit the lower number posi unit. check them in the classified section
you can buy aftermarket gears that will fit in a stock 7.5 i have a malibu and i just put jegs 3.42s in
