cam bearings

If they only have 5000 miles on them and are not damaged you will be fine... Cam bearings are not high wear items....

h0trod389 your cam bearings should be fine, just inspect them for wear.
if you are going to change the bearings, either buy 2 or 3 sets of bearings and the tool. because i dont know anyone who was happy with their first cam bearing install. it took me 4 times of screwing it up to make me say "skrew this im taking it to the shop" gotta be by far the wors part of building a engine. IMO!
if you decide to take it to a shop, be prepared to rip the lowering rotating assembly out.

Landau454 As long as you take care removing the cam and didn't beat them up, they should be fine. Cam bearings wear very little, they rotate at half the speed of the crank and have very little pressure on them compared to a crank or rod bearing.

Cam bearing wear question

Do the cam bearings need to be changed out with a cam swap, even if they are only used for about 5000 miles and are visually intact? I don't want to get in a situation with improper wear characteristics like using old rings in a freshly honed cylinder wall or old lifters on new cam lobes. It's not that I'm so cheap that I won't go buy new bearings, it's that I don't have the tools to remove the existing bearings myself. I would need to take the engine out of the car and down to the machine shop to get it done properly, as opposed to simply sliding a new cam in on the old bearings with the engine in the car. If it is one of those things that needs to be done once and done right I will of course replace them, but I thought I should see if it is really necessary first.

Your input is appreciated
