Online parts purchase, credit card fraud

I get all my parts online. I purchase from big companies like Summit and small mom & pop outfits too. I call them up, give them my credit card number and order the parts. Latley I've run into some problems and I don't know if my purchasing method is the blame. Last Aug I found that someone was making purchases with my card number. It just happened again this week. I have a VISA card and I was able to fix the problem right away. I want to order some seatbelts from Juliano's but I'm a little gun shy. How do you guys do it? Been thinging about buying everthing through PayPal. What do you think? Thanks

I make purchases on line with my debit/credit card. I usually deal with Summit, Jegs, etc. If it's a company I haven't ordered from before, I check their online security system out before I will order from them. I always check before I order if I've never ordered from the company before. If I order over the phone I use a corded phone that I have in the house. I do not use my cell phone or the other phones without cords on the receiver. These lines are less secure and can be received by something as simple as a baby monitor. Believe me on this. I have heard phone calls in my area over my Son's baby monitor when he was younger. I also shred all bills, especially anything with an account number on it, before it goes in the trash. I think that about covers it.

I would cancel that credit card and get another number. Then I would open up a credit card account to use only for internet purchases. You can have your bank set a fairly low limit on the card which will keep people from being able to run up large charges if the number gets stolen.

That's what I do. I never use my regular card on the internet and when I purchase from e-bay I use PayPal exclusively, unless the seller doesn't except PayPal and then it all depends on his feedback score. If it's very high then I'll buy from them and send a money order, if not then I just don't buy.

That's what I do. I set up debit account and put the money in the account. Then buy and use up all the money. If my No. get's used then I have no money for them to steal. You can't be too careful. Pretty much doesn't matter how well you protect yourself, someone out there can get what they need. Whether it be shredding old bills (they can steal out of your mailbox instead) or using a corded phone (wire taps are just old tech) I always try to shop at the same places and buy local whenever possible.

Keep a close eye on you statment's too. Some crooks won't rack up large amount purchases at once because you will notice. But if they spend a twenty dollars here and there every few months, a lot of people will miss that and go on paying it. Never canceling the card. ifa crook get's a few dozen card No., He's got it really going on.

Most credit cards are insured against fraud, by credit card insurance policies held by credit card companies. You'll either pay nothing if someone uses your card, or you'll pay a very small fee. All you have to do is keep your eye on your statements. If you didn't personally purchase the item, most likely, you won't have to pay for it.

This isn't the first "is it safe to use credit cards?" thread. I would be interested to hear from someone that had been defrauded, and the credit card company didn't reimburse them. Credit card companies pay for credit card insurance, but they gain consumer confidence, which ultimately pays off in greater spending, and greater revenue from interest rates.

Using credit cards on the net is certainly far safer than handing your card over to the high-school kid at the gas station. However, "Hacker steals 1 million credit card numbers" makes for a great TV news headline.

In addition to fraud protection, you have other added benefits.

PayPal is similarly convenient. However, they do charge a fee that may be higher than what you're paying with your credit card. And, they typically provide less rights than you have when using your credit card. More info at http://www.paypalsucks.com.

I use a special account that has a debit card just like Johnsongrass does. I only keep enough jingo in the account to cover my purchases.

If my debit card number is stolen, then they will only get declined, because they have reached an account with no jingo.

"Mr. Thief, your card sir, has been declined."

paypal WIL NOT refund your money if the seller screws you .... you can order $1000 part, and get a $1 worth of sand, and all paypal will do is check that the shipped SOMETHING to you

as long as the seller submits a tracking number, paypal washes their hands of it

THEN you have to go thru your credit card company just the same as before

if youve had good luck clearing charges made by someone else so far, stick with what your doing

if you dont want to use credit, send money orders

currently a friend of mine has to wait 6 months to get $300 from pay pal because paypal requested INVOICES proving where he got the items he sold .... items that he had laying around the house, spare car parts, airsoft gun and some odds and ends
