Not having a crossmember was never a problem for us when we rodded 55-56 Chevy's in the sixties. My 56 had a stout 292 (283 over .060) with a Muncie 4 speed. I used to power shift the snot out of it and it never gave me any problems.
It is a simple matter to fabricate a trans mount out of tubular steel if you are so inclined. Please do not use angle iron however, it looks really tacky. If you decide to add a trans crossmember you may as well go ahead and convert to side mounts on the engine also.

You will need both unless the engine was already converted to side mounts.

55 Chevy 4-speed Cross Member?
MY 55 CHEVY HAS A BUILT 350sbc BACKED WITH A 254 MUNCIE 4-SPEED AND IT STILL HAS THE OLD STYLE BELHOUSING WITH SIDE MOUNTS,,, ONLY THING THAT IS HOLDING MY TRANS IN IS THE DRIVESHAFT AND 4 BOLTS GOING 2 THE HOUSING. I NEED TO KNOW WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO BUY A NEW CROSSMEMBER FOR THOSE CARS PRETTY CHEAP OR WHAT KIND OF BRACE CAN I USE MAYBE FROM ANOTHER YEAR THAT WILL HELP SUPPORT THE TAIL SHAFT BEFORE I DROP MY TRANS OUT ON THE HIGHWAY 1 DAY LOL THANKS FOR ANY HELP DAVE
