What Can I Really Expect From a High Stall Torque Converter ?

Hello,

My situation is this....my engine was rebuilt last summer and the guy put a cam in it that's great in the mid but soggy in the low end. I could drive around all day in the mid because it's a rocket, but anything under 3000 RPM is kind of spungy when I punch it.


So, my options are a set of taller gears (I currently have 2.79:1......I know, I know) or get a high stall torque converter.

So, what can I really expect from a high stall torque converter? Will it actually manipulate more torque then normal or is it just the equivalent of reving the engine up to 3000 RPM and then droping it into gear....ouch.


What would you do for more low end torque and snap?

a high stall speed converter is 'looser' so you need to rev higher to get things moving. Sounds like your car needs a gear ratio change first, before you tune the converter. If you engine starts and idles fine when you drop the tranny in gear with the car at a dead stop, you probably don't need a higher stall speed converter. All it does is force (allow) you to run your engine aat a higher rpm but if that isn't necessary, it also will waste gas 'cause the slip is higher and engine efficienecy suffers a little. If the engine is designed for high speed opeeration, it makes up for the higher stall speed inefficinecy but if it isn't necessary, it just wastes gas. I think a set of 3:54s will go a LONG way to solving your problem. You will be amazed ant the difference.

I agree, willys36 is the man. You need gears not a high stall convertor. A high stall won't hook up till you reach the stall speed, you may never reach the stall speed in town in daily traffic and will overheat the engine and burn up the stall convertor. Raise the rearend off he ground and put stands under the axkles. Put the trand in neutral, Mark the drive shaft and tire and turn the rear wheel while counting the revolutions of the drive shaft till the tire make one complete revolution now you have your gear ratio 2.72X1 or 3.50X1 so 3.50 gears, how ever many times the drive shaft turns with one revolution of the tire is the gear ratio. Now your ready to buy a new pig and different gears to fit your power needs.
