1951 Chevy coupe Rear

hi guys

I have a 1951 2dr Chevy coupe and it has its original rear in it and I’m looking to update it . I’m putting in a b&m 400 turbo trans and I won’t something strong and dependable. I’m looking for something in the late 70's or newer. what kind of car would you guys say i could get this rear out of.

thank you

2nd gen Camero rear end's swap right in i'v heard. find 1 in a yard, measure to be shure it will fit.

you couldn't use the original rear with a T400 anyway, it's a torque tube rear, and likely 4.11 gears at that. Luckily being my car is a PG car, I have 3.55 gears

Why run a T400? BB's don't fit in a early 50's Chevy without a lot of work, and the T400 will take a lot of power from a SB, T350 is a better choice. also, you will need to relocate the e brake stuff, it's in the way for a V8.

51 Rear End

I have a 50 Chevy Fleetline.. The first thing to consider for me was the width which I measured to be 60" outside to outside. I ended up using a 73 Camaro Posi I picked up on Ebay. It is a 350 ratio.. I liked that because I want to cruise mostly but get there sort of quick. I also have a 700R4 Tranny so that helps with gas etc.
Just a note.. I have a couple of friends who used 55-57 chevy rear ends with great success... Another that fits is a late model S-10 so you can have disc brakes if you can afford it ....

Get what fits under there. Just keep in mind that you will only be able to use 8-9in tires because of the way the inner fenderwells are made.

I am tubbing a little to fit larger tires under there. Instead of using a cut down rear, I am doing backspacing on my wheels for the larger tires. 10-12 Inches. I narrowed my chassis using a driveshaft loop crossmember and some braces. It really strenghtened up the chassis. If want to see just email me.

The rear end under your car originally was in the 59 inch range. Measured this way ...

I have used 57 to 59 Ford passenger car rear ends under the 49 to 54 Chevrolet cars ... but then ... I use them under almost everything I do ... 78 up Monte Carlo and Malibu rears also work nice ... and have the standard GM Chevrolet wheel pattern ( 5 on 4.5 ) .

Here is a link that lists a good many vehicle widths ... both front and rear ... for common American vehicles .
