The Vega steering box on the frame I just bought seems to be running dry-maybe no lubrication in it at all. What do i use as lubricant and how do I get it in there? :)

No one is answering so I'll give it a shot. I made up my own concoction to put into manual steering gears and it has worked for 20 years. I don't think I have ever heard what is supposed to go into 'em. I pack them with wheel bearing grease then mix in just a little engine oil to make the grease just slightly liquid. Many times thicker than differential 90w oil but mobile enough that it will easily penetrate the recurculating balls and not wad up in a corner like grease tends to do. Never worked on a Vega unit but there should be a filler port somewhere. If not take off the side cover and fill it there. If the bearings are grinding I would do a total tear down, cleaning and rplacing the offending bearing. Good way to learn about how it works and make sure it is in good shape. The bearings are very cheap @ bearing supply shops or auto parts stores. DON'T go to a dealer; The will rip you off royally.

Thanks for your help-I haven't checked out the bulletin board for a while-one of my daughters is getting married in a week and the rod is on hold for some reason.
