Either would be fine for an airbrush.
But for a hvlp full size paint gun. Not much.
I think your confusing CFM with PSI.
Volume vs. Pressure.
It would work with a convintional gun for a short while but those regulators will not pass enough CFM to satisify a full blown hvlp gun for very long IMO.
Unless you got a railroad car size tank.

HVLP spraying with CO2 rather than air
Do modern paints require that they be sprayed with air, or would CO2 also work? I only ask because getting a cylinder of CO2 refilled is cheap, the output would be dry and cool, and there's definitely enough available CFM. Has anybody tried this?
CO2 would be a great alternative to a big compressor for people like me if it works.
Edit: how about Nitrogen?
