Busted Knuckles Thanks tm454, I looked at the threads with a magnifier and didn't see any damage. I'm guessing my column is from a first gen camaro/firebird, and I'm not real sure about the column the donor nut came from (I remember moving a bust T top out of the way, so it had to be mid seventies- early 70's), so it's prolly metric.
I'm glad you mentioned that the nut should go down easily (clears up that should I crank it down or not question).
Gonna stop by my favorite parts store this afternoon and just buy a couple different ones if they have them.
Thanks y'all. BTW, when I was in the Air Force, locknuts were called wife nuts....cause they don't go down easy... <img src="graemlins/mwink.gif" border="0" alt="[mwink]" />

tm454 Having made several steering wheel changes on 50's, 60's and earily 70's GM cars I can say the Nut goes on easily down to the wheel. A metric nut will or might JUST start and become tight/stuck. Don't crank it down if it stops just short of 1/2 thread as it may very well be metric. Any idea what year the column you have is from and the year the doner nut is from? I take it you don't have a thread chaser/tap and or die that large to gently run the column thread and doner nut? Say the nut and column are compatable but the nut won't start or run, If the column was laying around your garage you may have bumped the thread. Take a close look at the thread on the column as it may be squished and won't accept a nut. You can take a SMALL file to the thread if it is damaged and removed the smashed thread and allow the nut to run down. Also check with NAPA, they have books on just about everything and may be able to give you a heads up on what you need and even get you a new nut.

Busted Knuckles Thanks Connman, It may be just the locking feature that I'm feeling when I start the nut onto it. Like you said, it turns a couple of threads and quits. It just feels kinda tight for a locknut.
But before I start crankin it down, I'm going back to the boneyard and grab some more. I'd forgotten that it could also be metric.

connman as far as I know same years up to about 80 same style{tilt/not}are same it should be locking locking nuts screw on a couple of threads befor it stops. turn 1/4 turn and inspect threads on nut and shaft try again turh it 1/2 and recheck junk yards full of cars go get couple of nuts metric and std

Gm steering wheel nut

Anybody real familiar with GM columns?
I'm putting one in a F100, and I don't have the steering wheel nut. I took one off of another column at a boneyard. It appeared to be about the same year column. I tried the nut on my column but it either don't fit at all, or the threads are screwed up, or its a locking type nut.
Can anyone enlighten me before I screw up my column? Are they a standard NF thread or some off the wall GM specific thread size, (I can't find my thread gages)?
