jimfulco They need to be longer to account for the thickness of the washers. If you don't use washers, the bolt heads will dig into the head. If you use washers and stock bolts, there won't be enough thread engagement.

i use studs

i dont use bolts i use studs on all my engines but i wouldnt use cast iron bolts on alum heads thats why the alum head bolts are longer due to the alum head going to expand when hot so use the bolts for the alum head if you using the alum heads

onovakind67 With aluminum heads you want to use the type with a washer, and lube the head up good with moly lube.

hi

is it OK to use cylinder heads bolts from a cast iron headed SBC on Aluminum heads ??

I am asking because on some Aluminum headed SBCs I've seen bolts with washers and they are a bit longer

bolts for Iron heads
