And it doesn't hurt anything. Spray WD-40 inside the cap, shake it out don't wipe it, and ignore the green.
Always remember the 50/50 rule of hotrodding..... "If its 50 feet away going 50 mph you won't even notice it".

This type of corrosion is common in caps that use aluminum ignition inserts rather than copper. It is a product derived more from ozone than water vapor.
Now when found in a GM car, it is referred to as crotch rot...

DO NOT use STEEL WOOL or metallic grinding of any kind!!!!
If it is an HEI, or other Magnetic Pickup type of trigger, You will end up with slivers of steel stuck to the magnetic parts and it will trigger all over the place as the rotator star turns! (Akin to having points that fire anywhere they want..)
You may be getting Condensation UP the shaft from the crankcase, settling inside the cap..you just may want to consider pulling the Dizzy and inspecting it for end play and runout..AND while you have it out..Media blast it.

|orangef4||If it's just on the metal, it's corrosion. Just clean it up with some steel wool or similar.|

|dhomsey||I changed the cap and rotor and will check it again in 3 months. And yea, $6 a gallon for 110 octane getting 8 miles a gallon .... there's a little bit of sniffling going on at my house.|

i wouldnt worry about it.... i would change the cap n rotor, and keep an eye on it. its probally green spray paint.... from the things ive seen..
13:1 compression? and people cry about the fuel prices for 91 octane.....

a Mildew in the distributer??
I keep my car in the garage always. never drive in the rain (no wipers). Took it in the shop for work and noticed light green color on the metal inside the distributer cap? 455 engine 13:1 compression. I drive it a little almost everyday. mechanic asked if it sits outside and how often do I drive? anyone know what would cause this and any solution? Thanks again. ( i owned the car for 10 months and never checked this)
