oldred Cool, A regulator is factory set and you should never alter these settings, IMHO I think they should be sealed and tamper proof. When I still had my shop one of the most common repairs I made to compressors was to correct the settings after it was fouled up by the owner trying to get more performance out of the thing. There is a delicate balance between the start up setting and cut off setting and these can be difficult to set properly and down right dangerous for for someone not familiar with them. If the problem is due to a tampered with regulator it may be repairable but only by someone experienced in doing this otherwise the only safe thing to do is to replace the regulator with the proper unit for that model. If you do replace it make sure it is rated for the motor and set at the same pressure as the original was when new.

cool rockin daddy I was just hoping to dial the regulator down so it will shut off before the pop off comes into play. Guess I will take it in if it is not a DYI type fix.

oldred DO NOT under any circumstances attempt to adjust that regulator!!! You have a major regulator failure either due to a faulty/stuck regulator or wiring error. The pop-off did what it is supposed to and if it had not this could have been a major disaster, a tank explosion can be extremely violent. Before you attempt to run this thing again find out what is wrong and do not attempt to run that thing until you know. If it is new then use the warranty if not then you need to have someone qualified to look at it, make no mistake about it this can be very dangerous and can easily lead to a serious or even fatal accident and I am not exaggerating the dangers here!

cool rockin daddy

I bought a nice Craftsman vertical air compressor. Scared the you-know-what out of me when I first used it this past weekend. Supposed to shutoff at 180 p.s.i. Well, it kept running until the popoff valve did it's thing. How do I adjust the pressure regualtor (I am assuming it is mis-adjusted and needs some tweaking) to have it shut the compressor off at the desired pressure? Thanks in advance.
