I found i place down here that was really cheap,,, $319 a year for $20,000 full coverage for my 55 chevy.... here is the story we did all the paper work and i paid in full up front and just when all they had to do was file the paper work he ask me if the car had a roll bar in it :drunk: well i said yes of course it does, 'he seen all the pic's of the car' DUH!!! like i said it was a done deal and pain in full then he said do you race this car.... :mwink: well i told him not no more but at 1 time it was set up to look like a 60's gasser for show and thats it, which really i was telling the true i might race this car once in a while but its not that fast and its really just a weekend driver u know....... he turned to me give me my money back and said :nono: we can not insure a car with a roll bar in it........... I was mad as heck.. my car isnt a race car really it just looks like 1.... i drive this car on the weekends u know.... He told me to cut the roll bars out of it and they could insure me again! Im not cutting the roll bars out of my car,,,, for 1 like i said it is set up to look like a 60's gasser plus the bars in my car cost over $2000 + installed time........

Can anybody help me with a number to call for classic ins company's in ky?? if so it would help alot thanks

t-smoke,

There are a number of insurance companies with the "no roll bar" rule...so you are not being singled out here. And virtually ALL classic/street rod carriers specify the car can not be insured for race situations. But that doesn't really solve your problem.

You might want to try Sneed. They insured my roadster and it has a very visible roll bar. My guess is, the more your car looks pro-street, the more suspicion by the insurance co.

What's wrong with a roll bar? Isn't it safer???
Well see, that's your problem. You have a nice RATIONAL mind. Unfortunately insurance companies don't think in rational terms. They think in "risk" terms. And they most likely figure a car with a full roll cage, or even just a roll bar, is more likely to do a little street racing now and then...and is therefore a higher risk. Sanctioned "strip" racing doesn't matter because it is already prohibited by the terms of the policy. So if you are in an accident at the drag strip you aren't covered anyway. But out on the street it's a different story. And a roll bar is seen as a sign of a "racer type" rather than a "safer type". Go figure.

Haggerty rep told me no roll bars!!

My T bucket had been insured by State Farm on my regular auto policy (with six other vehicles) for the last seven years. This spring I went to re-up the policy and am told that State Farm will no longer insure modified vehicles!!

So I called around and Haggerty was the best rate for my situation and less than a third of State Farms price. With more coverage..

Try J. C. Taylor.

They covered my modified cars and I've been with them for over 10 years now.
I sent pic's to jc taylor and told them that my car wasn't never going to be raced,,, but it was built to look like a 60's race car for show only...... well long story short they said cut the roll bars out then we will cover you :( SO im still looking around for a good ins company...

Hagerty says they do not accept "pro street" race minded vehicles with modifications such as roll cages or nitrouse. yet says nothing about roll bars, so I wonder if there Ok.

hmmm roll cage and roll bar's isnt that the same thing? I would think so.

I guess in my case i would have a cage because it has more then 4 bars inside it

Not to squelch the conversation, but T-smoke needs a carrier that SPECIFICALLY allows a roll bar or roll cage...not just general classic/rod insurance companies (of which there are many and there are many threads on HR.Com regarding hot rod insurance carriers). Anybody with specific insurance company/roll bar experience?

Classic Ca r Insurance

About 13 years ago I had a Model A coupe which I had insured as a "Modified vehicle" with State Farm Insurance up here in Ontario, Canada. I had sold the Model A and in the past year had finished my 36 Chev coupe. I went back to State Farm (whom I have been with since the mid 70's) to get the Chev insured. Everything was going o. k. until they asked me what I had for a motor. When I told them it was a 55 vintage Chrysler Hemi they turned right around and said no, they will not insure it even under the Modified category. They stated that if it had the original motor or a motor of the same vintage that was O.K. but not the Hemi. So that leaves you with the question "What is a modified vehicle?"
