If the engine is not yet installed in the vehicle, check behind the timing cover or on the rear of the block behind the flywheel for "010" (1% added tin) or "020" (2% added nickel), or both. The numbers are big and easily noticed.
There's another thread going on here somewhere debating the benefit of having a harder block (extra nickel).

|junior stocker||I had one of those. Had less than 20k miles on it, but was 8 yrs old, when it dropped #8 exhaust valve. Still have the block and crank. Those blocks must be awfully "soft" as there was quite a ridge for the miles it had on it. Still going to use it again one day.|

2 or 4 is the different mains.

according to my paper work that is an 86 Targetmaster crate engine
2pc rear seal, If its got the 993 head castings, thats a decent little
SB. It came in 2 an 4 bolt.

Is this casting # known to be a good block
Hi everyone, I have almost got my engine done; should be running by Monday. Just wondering if this casting number (10066036 Hecho en Mexico) is known to be a good block. It is a 4-bolt main block.
