I remember some company made a fiberglass pad that looked like the real pad. This would go over your old craked pad. Have you tried calling CARS (aftermarket supplier of chevy parts)?
I would loook under the dash and see how it is connected before decideing to switch to a steel dash. Besides the padded dash was a upgrade feature.
OK here it is

|armysniper||My 62 metal dash is welded in. I would check out maybe VFN and use a fiberglass dash. You can cut it up to fit what you need then pull it and paint it.|

1964 Impala SS Dash
I'm interested in removing the stock dash pad on my 64 Impala SS and filling the pad holes on the metal dash, and painting the dash. I was advised that a few of the lower end models (BISCAYNE/BELAIR) came with with a "bare metal dash" (no dash cover) with no holes in dash.
Would it possible to exchange my SS padded dash with a Biscayne/Belair bare metal dash with no holes, which method would be less expensive or more cost effective, assuming both dashes are inter-changable.
