It's got angles where there should be curves. The cab looks like it grew that way; the bed looks like slabs stuck together.

66GMC I saw a 67-72 Chevy truck with the mid-90's stepside box on it ... and I thought it looked pretty good. Sorry ... no pics.

Bed on early model

I really don't think it looks too terribly bad But i think Old Fart is right... round fenders and square fenders.

NEW INTERIORS Just wanted to post these.

Silverback That ford bed is just totally wrong.

The chevy bed has lines that are pretty close, I’d be tempted to go that way, and either cut it down the middle and narrow it or cut up the bottom steps and change those completely, or both… it would kind of depend on what it actually looked like in person. I might be tempted to fill the taillights and do something totally different.

Brian_B The repop beds are the way to go if you can afford them. I think they run close to $1500 at most places now. Plus shipping, if you live very far from the supplier.

I think (not 100% positive) you can order the new bed with 3" wider fenders too. That would allow a wider tire and not have to tub the bed.

I am pretty lucky. The bed itself is pretty straight and not rusted. The fenders have some dings, but nothing major. I found a 56 (actually came off a 56 from a guy who's dad bought it new) tailgate that was in good shape.

I am not sure of maximum width of the tires. I know a few guys running 10" wide wheels, but the tires are really close to the body.

You might want a couple of "rollers" (the height you want in tires and old steel wheels) while you are working on it. Get your stance where you want it and then do some measuring to see what will fit.

Since ford used the same truck wheel pattern up until the 80s somewhere (went metric), you could borrow a few different sizes of wheels and tires from friends for a trial fit. Just an idea.

As far as the same size all the way around...that would depend a lot on what front suspension you are going to use. Mine has the same size on all 4 wheels, but it is stock. I believe from my reasearch that the modern 215/75/15 is about what came stock on them. Mine were used and are just 205/70/15s, but they are fine for me.

Truck Bed

No, Brian you do bring up a good point. And that is why I'm trying to get points of view. I've thought of the accident scenario and can only hope that it wouldn't be my fault so that the other shmuck could pay for my efforts. But the more I think of it the more I like the idea of welding the fenders to the bed and smoothing them out. My wife just put in her two cents worth in and says the same thing everybody has been doesn't follow the same lines...too boxey. Sooooo....I guess it's a Pro's-Pick Box unless anybody has any other suggestions for a prefabbed box and fenders. Ohhh one more thing, I don't plan on tubbing the fenders into the box, any idea the max size rear tires to use with out tubs? I've been thinking maybe some 255's. Anyone ever use the same size tires all the way around???

Brian_B I am not fond of any of the newer beds on any older truck. To me...they just do not look right.

I have seen the older 50s boxes on different makes of trucks. Some look fine to me. Some look way out of place.

Ford used the same box from 53-72 (as far as the hay beds go).

They even used the same rear fenders up until 79. The boxes were different (wider and taller I am told).

As far as smoothing the seams in the original bed. I have seen the fenders welded to the bedside and smoothed in. However, if you ever get into an is a nightmare to try to replace a fender that way.

Just my thoughts. Not even worth .02

D9ZZ The purple one is a Ford 92-96 flareside bed if I am not mistaken

Truck Bed

Good point, it does look out of sync. Nice effort nevertheless.

Tailights are too large and the bed is too square to look in proportion with a rounded style of truck

OneMoreTime I think what the guys are looking for is something that looks like it belongs on the truck..The Chevy bed is not half bad but it has those feature lines on the bottom that are misplaced..I am not saying a thing about the portholes..

Here's a truck with the late model Ford bed on it. What do ya'll think???

Truck Bed

Yea, I'm not a big fan of the extended cab part of this truck either, but I do like the late model bed. I found me a 97 stepside bed but i don't know if I'd need to narrow it.

We're doin good here ya'll keep the comments and suggestions coming.
