One thing I forgot about is how the column connects to the steering shaft. I know that there are at least two different styles for these trucks - double-D and splined. I don't know which had which, but my '79 4wd auto has the double-d style, while a '78 2wd manual in the local salvage yard had the splines.
So ya might have to grab the steering shaft as well if you swap the column.

|joe_padavano||The 73-87 (and 88-91 crewcab/suburban/blazer) steering columns all interchange. The problem is that as the years went along, GM changed things like putting the wiper control on the turn signal stalk. What exactly do you want to change? The columns all look alike. The steering wheels on all 69-90ish GM steering columns all interchange for the most part. You can probably put the wheel you want onto your existing column.|

I did not do a column change, but,
in my 79 w/tilt I tossed the original wheel in favor of
a smaller wheel from a Monte Carlo.
I did this for both of the trucks (I no longer have the 78)
Made a world of difference as far as the comfort level goes.
(hell, if I have working blinkers and tilt---I am very happy)
Also the very first thing I did to the 82 Dodge I acquired, was to install tilt/powersteering/smaller dodge van wheel

Yes, all very important considerations.
Where I am at the moment, I am busy making this project more involved!
I had to shave the cab pan & make new mounts for some 6-way adjustable leather seats out of a sedan... I had to power for that.
I installed a new buss under the hood and I have relays, circuit breakers and fuse position galore to use.
Rewiring will not be an issue with me, it is whatever it takes. I want to up date this rig and bring on a few more conveniences that we are used to.

Depending on how new of a steering column you go with (or how different), you might have to worry about doing some re-wiring. If your wiper switch is in the dash and/or the dimmer switch is on the floor, then you might have to do some wiring work if the replacement column has 'em on the column stalk instead.
You might have already taken this into account, but it's something else to think about.

Sorry, it was late last nite and I should have read what I typed before posting.
'73 Chevy 1/2 ton PU. Regular cab.
I am in the process of adding new seats, working on interior plans, and struggling with interior part replacement.
A new steering wheel and column would look oh so right.
So, in order for me to swap to something different, I stick with GM and measure the total column length and that is my only consideration?
Thanks for the initial posting, this is something I never never knew.

|Henry Highrise||73 what??? If it is a GM, you can put in a newer model column...just measure and make sure the length of the column is the same.|

I am tired of my old '73 steering wheel, blinker stalk and column, and want to change it out for something more up to date. How do I tell what will bolt up?
I do not mind some fabricating to make it work, I am wondering if anyone has done this and met with success.
My old wheel is suckamundo & has to go.
