Pretty much any rear whose hub-hub dimension will work with your wheels/offsets. I put a rear from an S10 Xtreme (quite narrow - 54.5" hub-to-hub as I recall, has disk brakes) into my 55.2
chevy stepside (probably the same bed as yours?). I'm running fat meats in the rear with minimal offset though to get a similar overall track width as the original, but to get the wheels tucked into the rear fenders. Do some math to figure out what your hub-hub dimension should be (based on your wheel size/offset) to fit into your fenders, then go hunting for an appropriate rear.

Hope this helps.

Too much work, but 73-87 1/2 ton rear will work. It will be 1.5" wider, but that's a plus....it fills the wheelwells better, even if you have wider wheels.

the ujoint & driveshaft will fit the new rear.

The work:

-cut off pads from BOTH rears and put the 69s on the donor.

-fabricate a new panhard bracket to weld onto the donor rear; or cut one off of a 60-63 pickup rear.

-now the panhard bar will be too short, so you need to lengthen it.

The bar deal is due to the fact that 64-72 rears have a boss casted onto the top of the center housing, so the threaded stud can fit in it. That's where the panhard bar hooks to. You can't duplicate it, so you need to build your own bracket (which you will not be able to get in the correct spot to use the stock bar)

It's too bad you don't have a 70, because that one year rear end can use the later 5 lug axleshafts & drums.......69 is too narrow

thanks alot guys but i just found out my truck has a posi rearend and now i was wondering if i can just take the 6lug axels out and replace them with 5lug would that work or should i just keep it a 6lugger.

Nope, as I said before, an original 69 rear end is narrower than 70-up, by about 1-1/2"...so each axle shaft will be about 3/4" too long. There is a SLIM chance somone swapped in a 70 6 lug rear (which is wider), but what are the odds of that :D

Why not have the rear axles redrilled fior 5x5"? Then you can do a disc swap using 96 back(IIRC) impala rotors and 4tyh gen f body calipers.

Shane

or use seville (don't remember the years for 5") rotors and calipers.
they'd have the e-brake built in to the caliper...

or late gm pu with 2 wd and grab the rotors and use seville calipers.

or MAYBE use the whole rear (or just the backing plates on out) and a pair of spring perches from CCP (i'm assuming you have coil springs on the back)

rear end swap

My '55 2nd series has a 10-bolt '77 Nova rear end w/ Leaf Springs and Drum brakes in it now. Current engine is a SBC 305 w/ TH350 pushing a 2.56 rear ratio. It is 61.0" WMS to WMS.

A stock '55's WMS is 62.0".

I am looking at buying a 1969 1/2 ton 2wd 12-bolt which I read is only 60.5" WMS.

I expect Drum Brakes would be OK, which is what it has. But it is 6 lug, so I'll need new axles and maybe an LDS or Locker with about 3.42 or 3.55 gears. The power will be a modified '69 SBC 302 (ex-Z/28) with Roller Cam and 3-2s driving thru a TH700R4 = 3.06 1st, 1.63 2nd, 1.00 3rd, and 0.70 4th gears.

My concern is the 60.5" 12 bolt versus the 62.0" OEM or even my 61.0" '77 Nova 10 bolt. Not sure what to do to fit her in or even if I should look elsewhere for a wider 12-bolt?

Your opinions, suggestions, knowledge for me please. Murf = world's oldest 1st time street rodder ! ? !

nothing wrong with the 10 bolt...used a lot of 'em in the 55-59 chevy pickups..
i SURE wouldn't go to the trouble and expense of the 69 1/2 ton 12 bolt...
