badsle thanks for that f-bird . , the heads have had a mild port and good grind on the valves with he guides taken back a bit, im not looking at going full hog straight out as i want something to do later , i worked out that with my 28" tyre and 4.11 gears it will trap at about 130mph at 6600, just worried about big revs in a 400 ,,,,cheers chris

F-BIRD'88 If the Sportsman II heads are stock out of the box, you will come up a bit short of your power goals. these heads need to be fully ported to realize their full potential. Did you flow test the heads? You want up around 260++cfm.
Once properly ported they make very very good power. They have 600hp potential when done right.
The RPM manifold is a very good intake, but with a 4500 to 6500+ rpm range you can go to a race single plane like the Vic JR or Professional products Hurricane and make more power.
The motor (with your healthy cam) will want to rev and you may want more gear (4.56) and 6800-7000rpm thru the traps. In excess of 500hp++ is well within reach with these changes.

406 small block questions

Hi all,

I am currently putting my 400 chev into a 82 model holden commodore ,

its 30 over as the title indicates and i chose to use a set of world sportsman 2 heads, they have 64cc chambers and that brings my comp with the trw forgies up to around 11:1 ...the heads have had a mild port job and the cam is 590 intake lift 609 exh lift, 268,271 duration @50 and 106 lobes ,

just wondering whether you think im on the right track to get 500hp out of this motor , it has turned without a drama to 6500 before, its got steel rods and balanced and blueprinted good bolts and forged slugs.

it has edelbrock rpm performer with 1" plastic spacer and 830 annular holley . and full barry grant fuel supply .

custom made tri y 13/4 to 21/4 to 3" headers with twin 3" exhaust .

full msd ignition etc .

i am hoping to run high 10 sec qtrs in this car as it is only 3100 pound with 28" tyre 4500 stall converter and 4.11 rear gears, do you tink im on the right track , is there anything i should check out or get looked at that you guys think i may have overlooked , i know about the steam holes but anything else would be much appreciated .
