I am starting a project with a complete GM V8 with a front wheel drive tranny. the design is to place this in the rear such as dune buggy or sand rail. does anyone know if I will run into any problems trying to make this street legal?
If your looking for a true bolt together motor and tranny you should look at the front wheel drive Cadillacs. How about a big block out of a Eldorado.
Just remove the steering rack and bolt the tie rods to the frame, just like the Fiero.
Setting the entire transaxle complete with radiator toward the front of the car just like it sits now in your donor car will work and has been done many times. Make brackets on your frame to accept the tie rods so you can adjust the toe-in/toe-out on an alignment rack and deep-six the steering box.
As far as.....would it be street legal? That would be a question to be answered by the NC Department of Motor Vehicles. Also ask about emissions while you're talking to them. If you have to register it as a 2008 vehicle, it may have to comply with 2008 emissions as well.
In Phoenix, they have a special testing station with a crew of technical people on staff to answer these kinds of questions about Arizona compliance. See if you can locate the same type of facility close to you.

Yeah no brainer, I did this with an Olds Toronado into a Toyota Hilux pickup a bunch of years ago. Lots of fun back when gas stations had attendants and you asked them to check the oil.
Radiator went in the standard posiiton behind the front grill. Plumbed with 1-1/2 inch copper pipe between. using rubber radiator hoses to make the connections.
Vehicle was already licensed but it had to pass emissions. All the Toronado emissions stuff came with it and was functional. State of California was happy with it.
