johnnya There are after market high torque starters available that have a dual bolt pattern allowing them to be used with the straight bolt pattern with either size flex plate.

Ed ke6bnl thanks for the fast reply. This motor does not have the trans on it it is just sitting in an old el camino and want to test the motor b4 putting it in my 72 el camino daily driver. I will get a staggard starter for it. love this site for the helpful people. Did do a search but the question of both patterns on a sbc I did not see thanks Ed

one_am im pretty sure all small block chevys have dual patterns (it will take a strait or a stagered pattern starter). i would deffinatly buy a starter for the flexplate that you have instead of dropping the tranny and going through all that crap. take a look at summit's web site.

flex plate question.

at present I have a 14"/168 flex plate on my 307 sbc motor about 1972 motor. the 283 starter has straight accross patern and does not fit the flexplate. can I just put a differant started to get this motor started, I only noticed a straight accross pattern on the motor. Will all the 350 motor and 307 have a bolt pattern for both starters, if not is there a started for straight accross pattern and for the 168 tooth flex plate, or will I have to change out the flexplate to a 153 tooth pattern to work thanks Ed
