i have been pondering what to lay under my carpet for noise vibration and insulation, i have some insulation that is used to wrap ducts for this purpose, if i doubleed it up under my carpet woudl you think this would work, its 1inch thick with foil on out side and fiber on in..thanks mark
Mark..........is the fiber inside like a jute? If it is it's not that it won't work ,but if it gets any moisture, it will stay damp and then start the dreaded rust on the floor. I have used a double side foil insulation with a dense bubble type material in between. You can find lots of insulation on the web if you just google "car insulation" . Just stay away from anything porous, as it can and will hold moisture.
I'm using this stuff, Volara - closed cell, reasonably priced and available in several thicknesses. Water absorbency is .04 lb per square foot (virtually none).
Using the usual jute - absorbs water like a sponge, has no sound resistance.
Besides that, you don't want to use anything that's 1" thick. My personal preference is to use a very thin foil faced self adhesive backed sound barrier like B-quiet Extreme or B-Quiet Ultimate CLICK HERE and then use regular re-bonded foam carpet padding 1/4" or 3/8" thick. Before you do anything, check to see what clearances you need to close your doors.
While closed cell foams like Volara are moisture proof, they are not very pliable, and would be tough to install, especially around places like transmission tunnels, etc. It also needs to be scuffed up to take off the shiny finish so that your glue will hold it.
