|27TRoadsterguy||I am looking for a TRW electric Parking brake set up. It uses an additional small caliper on each rear wheel. As I understand, its very effective and you push a button on the dash to engage the brakes, pushing it again releases the brakes. To me this is new technology which has been a long time coming, cables are stone age.|

if mine does not engauge within 1/2 of the total distance on the handle/ pedal, I adjust it so it does...
and not every system is designed to work in reverse.. most do, but the particular system that Ford used on the Mustang/ falcon, at least the 6cyl 7/1/4 rears, is not designed to work in reverse.. it actully does not apply preassure in that motion. the brakes would have to be tight to begin with, for it to apply in reverse... remember Ford did have a problem with rollaway vehicles in this time period. and part of it was insufficent parking brakes.. the other part was popping out of park.

reverse overpowers the P brake simply because R is a much lower tranny gear ratio than D and that multiples the motor TQ on the tires signifigantly...
BS numbers just to illustrate:
300ft/lbs of force x 2.46 first gear x 3.55rear gears = 2619ft/lbs of force on the P brake shoe
300ft/lbs x 3.90(?) reverse gear x 3.55 rear gears = 4153ft/lbs of force on the P brake shoe contact patch!!!!
check to see if you are not already at the end of the cables tightening adjustment (the funky threaded rod and nut where the cables are held by the cross piece) due to the cables are stretched or do stretch when pulled....
if yes then just add a bushing or oversized nut to act as a spacer in front of the nut against the cross piece to gain additional cables pre-tensioning tightening threads....
that will limit the handle travel alot,,,mine is fully engaged at just half the possible pull distance....

But they are called....... PARKING brakes...... not, overcome reverse brakes.
(and if your drum parking brakes won't hold a car from rolling rearward when parked on a fairly steep hill...... your brakes are fubar)

Most of the cars/trucks that I have had---
Reverse will easily overpower the e-brake
Once in Drive----you go nowhere

|matt167||there is no need to put a fancy pull handle or electric e brake to activate the e brakes.. just push the brake pedal, and apply the brakes.. they will lock tight and smooth...|

But here's a simple solution, on my 1930 5 window, I built a bracket off the 4-speed shifter bracket that lays flat on top of the tail shaft, pulled the emergency brake off a mid 1980's Camaro, it bolts to the floor pan by the shifter, has a nice handle and a ratchet lock, and about 14" of cable, so by running Ford truck e-brake cables foreward I built a bracket to hook it all up, that puppy really locks up. if the cables are too long which mine were considering the drive shaft is 34" long, I took a piece of 1/2" X 2" and drilled 5 holes, two on the flat above each other and one 3/8's in the center for the ebrake cable, the outer two holes are the same size as the ebrake cable from the rear drums, grind off the formed ball on the end, thread this cable through one hole, bend it into a "U" and shove it through the other hole, thus locking it to the plate, two good janks on the ebrake sets the "U" and now with about 4 inches of adjustment on the cable from the Camaro E-brake just adjust it up to work, Oh and keep the blocks ---this is still a FORD

actully, ford did put a warning sticker on the dash for rollaway cars.. says to set Ebrake and fully engauge in park.. I still have the 1 on my Falcon.. as I understand it was part of a recall....
of course the easy soloution to applying the E brake fully is to push the brake pedal down b4 pulling the E brake lever and it will pull much easier, and of course, the cables need adustment too.. pull the handle 1/2 way out, adjust cable until it fully engages the brakes, then release to make sure they free instantly.... also, the ford system does not activate in reverse, so keep that in mind too

Disclaimer; I have no intentions of 'stealing' this thread what so ever.
You must know, that you need to TOW your CHEVY, 'To and From' with a FORD by now.
I love a 'bumper sticker' from a while back, and it fits!

Proper parking brakes, even those old 60s things, hold very well on fairly steep grades..... it is a law thing. If they don't, fix the problem.
I might be an old geezer, but electric motor operated parking brakes are just one more modern device that can fail and leave you stranded. Think what might happen if they won't release. How would you make them release if there were a motor or gear drive failure.... take off the wheel, huh?
I would seek a better leverage advantage if I were too sickly to pull a manual type parking brake.

The brake system is 100% new and adjusted properly. I spoke to a number of local mustang guys, and with the hand brake, they are problematic at best.
Lots of brakes have busted handles, because you have to reef so hard on the handle to get them to work.
Restomod guys typically use a lever from a modern car and mount it on the driveshaft hump.
I have killed my budget on the engine, so will mess with the p-brake for a while.
The other thing might be to fabricate another lever with a better mechanical advantage.
If I ever get it working, I'll let you know,
