Have you checked with a few glass shops as to how much it would be to make new windows, it may not be as much as you think. The side glass is all flat right? So new safety plate can be cut easily. I have to assume it's made out of tempered now and you can't cut it (realistically) but if it's safety plate they can.
I will never forget when I went to get the glass for my truck in 1977. I had the same worries, it was going to cost too much and I wouldn't be able to buy it, I put it off and put it off. Now this was just cutting the original, but I figured hundreds of dollars, remember this was '77 and I was delivering newspapers on my bike making about $75 a month. I went to have the glass done after saving a few hundred and the bill was $36.
Wish I had done it sooner!

A proper windshield would be nice, but don't think it'll happen any time soon. Currently is a 1/4" polycarbonate sheet with about 20 sheet metal screws and silicone.
I figured the best way for me to keep this project going is to drive it as much as I can. If it isn't in driving or riding condition, it's like I lose interest. The weather and driving route to work has kept me from driving this car as much as I want.
More polycarbonate windows for the remaining openings, but the framing for the door windows that seperate the sliding glass are all in storage in LA. I can do the quarter and back windows in the meantime.

Clutch slave cylinder has always had a small leak, I rebuilt it many years ago, but it was never perfect. Was able to find a NOS clutch slave on eBay, watched it for a week on there and decided to try to find it elsewhere. After not being able to find it anywhere else, and everywhere that said they had them in stock ended up refunding money and saying they couldn't get it. The following week the same NOS clutch slave was relisted, and I was able to get it. Will more than likely install the new clutch slave, clutch hydraulic hose, and rear brake line this week.
Also cut my old custom airbox with velocity stacks apart, so I could put the velocity stacks on directly to the SU carbs, the old box I made years ago for fun was breaking apart from vibration, and the SS metal sheeting I used was too thin, and I didn't have supports other than the 3 bolts per carb filter mounting it had available.
Been having fun driving this around again. Took it to Cars & Coffee SF this weekend and it was a blast.
Next up after clutch hydraulics & rear brake line repairs, I'll be looking at my radiator. The bracket on the left side of it seperated from the top tank, but it's not damaged, I'm thinking it's from vibration and age. Might try to braze it, or solder it, then replace the rubber bushings that hold it onto the radiator support, get it to sit with a little more cushion.
Tires are coming soon too, going to go with a slightly smaller tire, currently the rear tires rub if I have a full tank of gas, and a passenger. With 2 passengers it rubs for sure the entire time.

roof skin welded, bracing needs adjustment, front brake lines replaced, and now has adequate braking power.

Skin trimmed, 2 supports welded in, skin tacked.
still needs alot more cutting and adjusting before rewelding, but it's moving.
Brakes are up next for work as I do the top still.

Moved back to the bay area and got the Volvo transported here a couple of weeks back.
Found a doner roof skin from a '70 Volvo 244 Wagon, fits the ticket.
Weld in supports, then the roof is ready to be trimmed down and welded into place. Probably next weekend is when I'll have time to head to the junk yard again to cut out the frame supports from the doner.

Will be working on getting the Volvo back on the road pretty soon.
what she needs:
Clutch master cylinder (rebuilt it in the past, but not doing well)
hose to connect hard line to Clutch slave
Rear brake cylinders need to be rebuilt (dragging)
A good ol cleaning in & out.

It's like I check in once a year on here..
Anyways, got rid of the crotch rocket, kept the '63 Honda scooter, continued modifying it and having fun with it..
This week, I recently picked up a welder. Lincoln Electric SP100. Been welding since I was 17 or so, so this is coming up to 10 years of on & off, hobby and work, mostly MIG, but TIG for a couple of months..
I can finally imagine a roof being on the volvo now.. But, I want to have the scooter fit in the bed of it..

Good to see you back. I wish I had photos of my Honda C110 50 I had back in the late sixties. I had a ball on that bike. My brother built it for me with a bobbed rear fender, a Yamaha front fork and of course knobbys. I rode the hell out of that thing in the creek and hills near my house.
